WESTERN CARE WESTPORT PROJECT

Mrs. Finola Bruton, wife of Taoiseach John Bruton will perform the official opening of the Western Care Carrowbeg Enterprises at Distillery Road, Westport on Friday April 11 at 2p.m.

The training opportunities at the centre are varied to satisfy a variety of needs and they include cookery, academics, self-advocacy, enamelling, candle making, sports and leisure activities, community orientation skills, personal development, dancing speech and drama, home management, work experience, jobfit as well as special Olympics.

COMPANY OF THE YEAR

Danfabrications Ltd, Ballina has been selected by the Mayo County Enterprise Board as "company of the year".

The managing director of the company, Liam Collins will be presented with his award by Mayo County Manager, Mr. Des Mahon at a luncheon in the Downhill Hotel, Ballina today (Wednesday).

STALKY'S REOPENING

Stalky's lounge at Castle Street, Castlebar will re-open tomorrow (Thursday) night after extensive refurbishment. Proprietors Padraig and Pat Gilligan have invested heavily in renovating the premises.

CHAMBER DINNER

The annual dinner dance of the Castlebar Chamber of Commerce will be held in the Imperial Hotel, Castlebar on Friday night April 11.

The guest of honour will be Mr. Mark Mortell, chairman of Bord Failte. Tickets are available from the Chamber office at New Antrim Street on 094-24845.

BALLYHAUNIS EASTER PARADE

The 4th annual Easter parade will be held in Ballyhaunis on Sunday commencing at 3p.m. (outside Manor House). There will be a £100 prize for the best float as well as other prizes for the best Easter bonnet. Costumes are available from Mary Smyth on 0907-30311.

THE LATE DR. NOEL REILLY

The death took place at his Dublin home on St. Patrick's Day of Crossmolina , Co. Mayo born Dr. Noel Reilly, former Secretary General of the Irish Medical Association. Dr. Reilly, who was aged 81, was a leading figure in Irish medical politics from the 1950's to the early 1980's.

Dr. Reilly's father was Postmaster at Crossmolina. He was educated at College St. Muredach's College . Dr. Reilly was predeceased by his wife, Nancy, and survived by his 11 children.

TOURMAKEADY'S MAIRE IS TOP BUSINESSWOMAN

Congratulations are extended to Marie O'Toole, Tourmakeady who has been selected as the Irish Permanent Young Businesswoman of the Year.

A past pupil of Colaiste Mhuire, Tourmakeady and a graduate of University College Galway, Marie, is daughter of Tomas and Bid O'Toole, Tourmakeady.

She is founder and chief executive of Eo Teilifis, the television company in Spiddal, Co. Galway which is currently producing Ros na Run, the soap series on TnaG which recently won the highest contract ever awarded in Irish Television.

Another Eo Teilifis programme Mira Mara has been sold to 19 countries worldwide. Eo Teilifis was established in 1989 and currently employs 100 people.

SERVICE OF LOUISBURGH MISSIONARY REMEMBERED

A MAYO priest has been honoured posthumously for his outstanding services to the Columban Fathers.

Fr. John Henaghan, who was born in Louisburgh in 1881, was one of five Columbans killed by Japanese soldiers in Manila in February, 1945.

His sacrifice is commemorated in a special exhibition at the home of the Columban Fathers at Dalgan Park, Navan, Co. Meath.

Fr. Henaghan, who was the first editor of The Far East magazine, was Superior in the Philippines at the time of his death. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the U.S. Government in 1948.

The exhibition at Dalgan Park was organised by Fr. Brendan McHale, a native of Ballina. Also involved in the project was Gerald Clarke, who also hails from Ballina.

The display is housed in the Columban Mission Awareness Visitor Centre which was the recipient of an award at the Interpret Ireland Awards Ceremony in Dublin on Thursday last.
