Mayo search for Oscar Traynor Cup gold
A 19-strong squad has been selected to represent Mayo in the Oscar Traynor Cup finals being staged at Milebush, Castlebar, on Saturday and Sunday next.
Mayo open their campaign in the series when they face Kerry in an intriguing semi-final clash on Saturday morning. It represents the first meeting between the sides at this level.
In the other semi-final, the Athletic Union League (Dublin) play Kilkenny at 2.30p.m. The final is fixed for Sunday at 2.30 in Milebush with the third-place play-off at Manulla at 12.00 noon on Sunday. The tournament is being hosted by the Mayo Association Football League in association with the F.A.I. Junior Council.
Mayo have only reached the final once in the history of the competition. That was in 1981 when they were defeated 2-0 by a Paul McGrath inspired Leinster Senior League outside.
Managed by Donal Benson, who is now the chairman of the Mayo League, the Mayo side on that occasion was Padraig Cresham, Mickey Nallen, Seamus McHugh, Lar Morahan, Greg Earls, Charlie Davis, Fergus McEllin, Mickey Curran, Brian Ainsworth, Joe Lindsay and Noel Walsh, with Michael McLoughlin and Frankie Gordan being used as substitutes.
The only other time Mayo reached the semi-final of the series was in 1988 when they lost 3-0 at the hands of the Athletic Union League at Westport .
