ALL-IRELAND DOUBLE

An All-Ireland qualifying double was recorded in Mayo at the weekend with home teams coming out on top in the under-21 and Colleges finals.

Mayo will meet Derry on Saturday week in the All-Ireland under-21 clash while St. Gerald's College, Castlebar will take on St. Patrick's, Dungannon in the All-Ireland Colleges Final at Croke Park on Sunday week.

ISLANDEADY SCHOOL

Tourism and Trade Minister Enda Kenny will perform the official opening of the new extension to St. Paul's national School, Cloggernagh, Islandeady on Sunday afternoon.

The proceedings will commence at 3p.m. when Mass will be celebrated at the school by Fr. Colm Burke P.P.

SUDDEN DEATH OF ALFIE McHUGH

The sudden death of Mr. Alfie McHugh on his farm at Treenreevagh, Bekan on Saturday last has shocked the entire farming community of Ballyhaunis and Claremorris regions where he served as an A.I. technician for almost 40 years.

Mr. McHugh (63), a native of Sligo was involved in the establishment of the Claremorris branch of the North Western Cattle Breeding Society.

He is survived by his wife Mary, sons Sean and Kenneth and daughters Anne, Maura, Freda, Sarah and Siobhan.

He was father of the well known and hugely popular traditional/folk group, The McHugh Family.

CASTLEBAR'S BID FOR INFORMATION AGE TOWN

Telecom Eireann is to spend £11m in creating Ireland's first Information Age Town. And Castlebar is bidding for the prestigious title.

Every home and business in the winning town will have a sophisticated phone/computer/link/voice-mail connection.

Every Child in Castlebar over the age of 5 will have access to full computer leaning, knowledge gathering and communications tools.

Can you imagine the benefits of a computer in every home and business? Can you imagine if they were all linked up?

This is what will happen if and when Castlebar wins.

If this concept interests you there will be an information centre opening soon at Ellison Street, Castlebar. Community support is vital for the success of this project.

BALLA SUBMISSIONS ON ASSOCIATION

At a very representative meeting of the Balla Town Improvements Association, under the chairmanship of solicitor Mr. Ward McEllin, a motion was passed allowing Retired District Court Judge Mr. Paddy Brennan to draw up a new set of rules and constitution to run the affairs of the association.

It was further agreed that his deliberations would be accepted by all members of the association..

Only householders can now made a submission to Mr. Brennan as to how the association should be run and submissions can only be made in writing initially while oral submissions may be invited at a later date.

DEATH OF INFANT

It is with great sadness that we record the death, after a short illness of Paul Gerard Murphy, the 2¸ year old son of Mary and Gerard Murphy of Ballyfarna, Belcarra, Castlebar.

His remains were removed from his home to Belcarra Church and burial took place in Guesdian cemetery.

START-ME-UP IN DELPHI

The RTE 1 Television "Start-Me-Up" series will feature the Delphi Adventure Centre, Leenaun on Tuesday night (8p.m.) when William Leahy takes to the great outdoors.
