MURRISK FAMINE MEMORIAL UNVEILING

President Mary Robinson, Taoiseach John Bruton and leaders of the main churches in Ireland will attend the unveiling of the national Famine Memorial at Murrish, Westport on July 20, Minister for State Avril Doyle, has informed, Westport Deputy Michael Ring.

The memorial will commemorate all those who perished in the Famine one-hundred-and-fifty-years ago. Deputy Ring said the ceremony will be a major event for Murrisk and a great achievement for all those involved.

ADOLESCENT BRIEFING

Understanding the adolescent is the theme for two sessions which will be held at the Family Centre, Castlebar on Friday (8p.m. to 10p.m.) and on Saturday (10a.m. to 1p.m.) Which will explore the impact of puberty on boys and girls in Ireland today.

It will also address the impact of TV, videos and pop music in teenage culture, how to get a handle on the stages they are going through, both physically, intellectually, spiritually and in relationships with their own family and people outside.

The facilitator of the sessions will be Paul Andrews S.J., a psychologist and former director of St. Declan's School & Child Guidance Centre and co-author of Parenting (1991). His book "Changing Children" was published in 1994. For bookings ring 094-25900.

BORD NA noG BOOK LAUNCH

The Archbishop of Tuam, Dr. Michael Neary will perform the official launch of "Castlebar Mitchels Bord na nog 1971 - 1996" at the Sportlann, Castlebar on Friday night (8.30p.m.).

The 224-page publication, which was printed by the Connaught Telegraph records the 25-year history of Bord na nog since its formation in 1971"

BALLYHAUNIS INTEGRATED PLAN

An integrated Action Plan for Ballyhaunis will be launched by the chairman of Mayo County Council, Mr. Pat McHugh, at a public presentation in the assembly hall St. Joseph's Convent national school, Ballyhaunis on Thursday April 24 at 8p.m.

The plan which covers all aspects of the physical fabric of the town has been put together by Mayo County Council with the UCD School of Architecture and Urban Design.

It has taken twelve months to evolve through a series of consultations with local representatives and development groups and it provides a vision of what the town could look and feel like in the 21st century. The drawings will be on exhibition in the assembly hall from lunchtime on Wednesday April 23. All are welcome to attend.

DR. IGOE AWARD

The presentation of the 1996 Dr. John Igoe Rehab Community Award to Ballina woman Mrs. Patsy Doherty of Cathedral Close, will take place at the Downhill Hotel, Ballina on Friday April 25.

Mrs. Doherty was selected because of the enormous amount of voluntary work she has done for the community.

The guest speaker on the night will be Mayo team manager, John Maughan and the Mayoman of the Year Kevin Bourke will also be in attendance.

SCHOOL HELPERS

Tourism and Trade Minister Enda Kenny has confirmed that three additional workers have been added to the Ballinrobe school FAS scheme and they will be assigned to the national schools in Cross, The Neale and Cong.
