DAN O'NEILL TO RETIRE AS TOURISM CHIEF

Castlebar man Dan O'Neill is to retire in October, on reaching the age limit, as the Regional Tourism manager of the North-West Regional Tourism Authority, the organisation which covers Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan and Sligo.

Mr. O'Neill joined Ireland West Tourism in Galway 30 years ago as promotions officer and later became assistant regional manager.

In 1983 he moved to Sligo as Regional Tourism Manager and since them he has been a director of several tourism related projects in the region.

He is immediate past president of the Skal Clubs of the Republic of Ireland and a former president of the Galway and North-West Skal Clubs.

He is president of the Institute of Tourism Officers of Ireland and vice-president of the European Union of Tourism Officers.

Dan played Gaelic football with Castlebar Mitchels winning Mayo senior county championship medals in 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954 and in 1968. He won a national League with his native Mayo in 1954 and an All-Ireland with Louth in 1957.

He was previously employed with the Post Office Engineers (Bord Telecom), Castlebar; St. Mary's Hospital, Castlebar; The Garda Siochana, the General Electric Company and Calor Gas (Ireland) Ltd.

His wife Nancy is from Drumconrath, Co. Meath and they have five children, Dan, Martin, Gráinne, Paul and Sean.
