Taoiseach John Bruton has selected Kenny with his brother Richard Bruton to write the new five year Programme for Government.

This would place Kenny next only to the Taoiseach and in a major position of influence as to what the policy document contains, particularly in relation to the West of Ireland in general and Mayo in particular.

This effectively rules out any suggestions that Minister Kenny is in line for the position of Ceann Comhairle following the retirement of the present incumbent Sean Treacy.

One FG party insider said last night: "The fact that Enda Kenny has been selected to draft the Programme for Government means her will hold a high profile Ministry if we are returned to power."
