PUBLIC ORDER TASK FORCE

A special task force has been put in place by Gardai in Mayo to combat the growing problem of public disorder in the region.

From this May Bank Holiday Weekend a unit of six Gardai and one sergeant will be hitting towns at random to concentrate on public order breaches.

Their brief will also include checking up on underage drinking, drugs, licensing laws and the running of discos.

The Chief Superintendent for Mayo, John Carey, has called on young people, parents and licensees to meet their responsibilities and work with the Gardai in eliminating the problem.

A major focus of the campaign is on underage drinking and the abuse of drink.

According to Chief Superintendent Carey, public disorder "arises around alcohol and its abuse."
