Planning permission sought for £25m hospital extension

The Western Health Board have sought planning permission for the erection of the £25 million phase two development of the Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar.

The application appears in this edition of the Connaught Telegraph and seeks to take down and remove part existing structures, carry out alterations to existing hospital building.

The WHB also seek to construct extension to existing hospital building which would incorporate the following departments: Concourse/Administration Services, Medical Records/Retail Outlet, Obstetric Dept., Paediatric Dept., Palliative Care, Day Care Unit, Gynaecology Dept., Medical Dept., Surgical Dept., Orthopaedic Dept. and Geriatric Dept.

Also included in the plans are a dept. of Psychiatry, Occupational Therapy Dept., Out-Patient Dept., Dialysis Unit, Physical Medicine, Radiology Dept., Pharmacy Operating Dept., Hospital Sterile Supplies Dept., kitchen/staff dining, central supplies store, Oratory/Pastoral care, Port Mortem/Mortuary, and Emergency Centre/Maintenance Base.

Also in the blueprint are a conference/educational facility, staff central changing and on-call-accommodation.

In their application the Architects Taylor Partnership want permission to relocate the main entrance access road, construct new access road through site including provision of additional car parking and alterations to existing car parking, relocate existing helicopter landing pad, the provision of healthcare waste compound and all ancillary and associated siteworks, entrance signage and structures.

Minister for Tourism and Trade Enda Kenny said: "I am very happy with the enormous speed with which this major project has progressed so far.

"Everyone concerned with then project has worked very hard to make it a success and I have every confidence that the £25m extension plan will be on schedule.

"The plan includes a full orthopaedic unit catering for the entire county. Patients will have state of the art equipment and treatment in their own county", he stressed.
