Daniel's Shrine spectacular takes a Knock

Connaught Telegraph, Mayo, Ireland 14 May 1997

Plans for an historic first ever public concert performance in Knock Basilica next December have been abandoned.

Ireland's most popular entertainer, Daniel O'Donnell was being lined up for a sell-out spectacular.

A spokesman at Knock Shrine confirmed yesterday (Tuesday) that the performance won't be going ahead. He said he could not comment further on the matter at this stage.

SELL-OUT

It had been envisaged that the event would be a capacity sell-out with 4,000 tickets being sold at £20 each.

A certain percentage of the profits would go to a well known charity whose volunteers would assist with stewarding and other duties.

Neither Daniel O'Donnell or his management Kieran Cavanaugh Promotions were available for comment yesterday but it is understood the singer had been quite looking forward to the Basilica engagement.

There had been ongoing negotiations for some time between the promoters and the charity involved. The authorities at the Shrine had given the event their blessing.
