Deflector candidate still possible

The Mayo Multi-Channel TV Deflector Group will hold a public meeting in the Travellers' Friend Hotel, Castlebar tomorrow (Thursday) night to which all public representatives and intended General Election candidates are invited.

Group Chairman, Padraig Cunnane says a deflector candidate may stand if there is support for such a move at tomorrow night's meeting.

Although the Deflector Group has decided on a narrow margin not to put a candidate forward, this preclude a candidate standing on an independent deflector ticket.

Cardiac stress machine

A new cardiac stress test system will be presented to Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar by Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiology Foundation on Monday at a ceremony in the hospital at 11a.m.

F R Higgins Weekend

The launch of the F.R. Higgins commemorative weekend will take place at the Foxford Woollen Mills Visitor Centre on Friday evening at 9p.m. with a recital by Carolans Consort and the opening of the display of Higgins work, readings by Aisteoiri Beal Easa.

There will also be a presentation on the display by Mr. Austin Vaughan, Mayo County Librarian and a cheese and wine reception. There are also events planned for Saturday and Sunday all are free and the public is welcome to attend.

Jilly Cooper In Castlebar

Top selling English author Jilly Cooper visited Castlebar recently where she called into Wynne's newsagency and signed several of her books for Richard Wynne.

The Pirates in Ballinrobe

Ballinrobe Musical Society have decided to stage"The Pirates of Penzance" as their production for 1998. Rehearsals will commence in the Autumn.

Belcarra Footpaths

Mayo County Council have informed Minister Enda Kenny that they are giving consideration to including some footpath work in Belcarra village in next year's road works scheme Sea survival course

Members of the fishing community from Inishturk Island, nine miles off the Mayo coast, participated in a day long sea survival course at Castlebar swimming pool where they received instruction on the use of lifejackets, handling lifecraft and survival procedures.

Death of Dr. Tom Fleming

The death has taken place of Dr. Tom Fleming of Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, father of Mr. Alex Flaming, assistant County Manager with Mayo County Council.

The late father of the deceased, Peter Fleming, was a native of Clonnfert, Castlebar. The deceased was a brother of Fr. Eamon Fleming, a regular visitor to the Belcarra Parish.

A vote of sympathy was extended to the Fleming family by members of Mayo County Council at their meeting on Monday.
