Mary Black eliminated before the first
count
21 May 1997
Singer Mary Black has become a victim of the election. Her concert date at the Travellers Friend Hotel and Theatre, Castlebar has to be rescheduled as it clashes with the day we go to the polls.
The venue has been booked as the count centre for Mayo and will be occupied by the returning officer, Fintan Murphy and his staff from Friday June 6.
After the close of polls all the ballot boxes will be taken to the centre in preparation for the count the following day.
The Mary Black concert will be refixed for the end of July on a date to suit the singers tour schedule.
The large ballroom at the Travellers Friend Hotel will be sectioned off for the count which will take place on Saturday June 7 and could, if there is a recount situation, go into the Sunday.
