APC jobs move
APC bosses in Galway have been in contact with Castlebar Chamber of Commerce seeking a directory of services in the area prior to their move to the town in July where they will employ 245 workers.
The chamber is anxious to ensure that the directory is completely up to date and those in the service sector who may not be included should contact Maria Quinn at the Chamber office on 094-24845.
Bartra Island Purchased
A consortium has purchased Bartragh Island on the Moy Estuary and, as reported in the Connaught Telegraph of March 19th, Nick Faldo, Britain's top golfer is believed to be among the purchasers.
It is understood that an exclusive 18 hole golf course will be built on the island which was previously owned by Ms Mary Molloy, a native of Ross, Killala.
Ballina auctioneer, Garrett Loftus has confirmed that the 367 acre island has been sold in trust to a Dublin based firm of solicitors for a sum in the region of £300,000.
New Jobs for Ballyhaunis Plant
Twelve new jobs are to be created at the old Farah plant in Ballyhaunis. R.O.M. Plastics of Glenamaddy have confirmed that they have begun preliminary work on the venture but cannot say exactly yet how many jobs will be provided.
Local Minister Jim Higgins has welcomed the news. He says it will be a timely boost for the area. R.O.M. makes high quality bathroom suites.
Belmullet best
St. Brendan's College, Belmullet won the MWR/NWR schools debating competition last week.They beat Davitt College, Castlebar. The St. Brendan's team was: Brendan McDonagh Laura Butler. Teacher Liam Ega (Captain); Nicola Geraghty and Aoife Redmond (Teacher: Ann Marie Allen). Davitt College: Toni Burke, Tony Staunton and Laura Butler. Teacher: Liam Egan.
Met President
Popular Caroline Shevlin of Belmullet, a member of Ballyglass lifeboat, was one of a small group of RNLI members which met President Mary Robinson at Aras an Uachtarain yesterday. Earlier this year, 26 year old Caroline was a crew member on a schooner on a sail training voyage in the Atlantic and got an excellent report on her performance.
Shamrock motor home on 'Kenny Live'
One of the motor-homes manufactured by Shamrock Motor Homes, Kiltimagh was featured on 'Kenny Live' on Saturday night.
And the state-of-the-art six berth unit will be raffled on the show this Saturday night.
Radio tribute to Michael J. Egan
This evening (Wednesday) between 6 and 7p.m. CRCfm will broadcast a special tribute to the late Mr. Michael J. Egan.
Presented by Pat Staunton it will feature an interview with Mr. Egan and guests on the programme will include EU Commissioner Padraig Flynn, Judge John Garavan, Captain John Cunningham (Order of Malta), Councillors Johnny Mee, and Paddy McGuinness and Mr. Sean Horkan.
Open day at Achill Lifeboat Station
The RNLI will stage an open day on Sunday at the Achill Lifeboat Station and the committee and crew invite members of the public to come to Kildownet on Achill island to see the station and meet the crew.
The open day will be held from 3.30p.m. to 7p.m. and will involve a full demonstration showing all the details of a lifeboat alert and launch and various kinds of rescue operations.
Lifeboat badges, posters, sea safety booklets and refreshments will be available on the day at the lifeboat station.
Castlebar Tidy Towns
The official launch of the 1997 Castlebar Tidy Town campaign commences on Friday at Chestnut Grove, winners of last year' housing estate competition.
The launch, at 7.30p.m., will be performed by Mr. Eoin Garavan, chairman of Castlebar Urban Council who will plant a tree which has been sponsored by Castlebar Garden Centre, Westport Road.
MS Meeting
The annual general meeting of the South Mayo branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society will be held in the Westport Woods Hotel on Saturday at 4p.m.
The guest speaker will be Dr. John Hynes, Ballinrobe
Mayo backs Brainwave
Brainwave, the Irish Epilepsy Association will stage a walkabout on Sunday to raise funds for a number of initiatives and to raise the general awareness about epilepsy.

Western Care Funding boost
A grant of £16,000 has been approved for the Western Care Association, the Department of Health has conformed to Minister Enda Kenny. The allocation has come from the National Lottery funding programme.
Letterfrack Furniture
Mr. Richard Thorn, head of Centre of the RTC, Galway Castlebar Campus has welcomed the announcement of state funding of £4.3m towards the capital costs of development of facilities for education, research and development at Letterfrack in support of the furniture industry.
Petunia Competition
Ten national schools from Mayo will take part in the Barnardo's Junior Petunia schools competition, the finals of which will be staged at Horkan's garden centre, Castlebar on June 10.
Some 300 children have been supplied with junior petunia plants.
There will be a special prize for the beat boy and best girl and the winning school will receive £250 worth of shrubs and there will be many spot prizes.
The participating schools are St. Joseph's, Leitir; St. Peter's, Snugboro; St. Patrick's, Castlebar; Scoil Raiftoiri, Castlebar; Foxford N.S.; Mountpleasant N.S.; Parke n.S.; Murrisk N.S.; Killawalla N.S. and St. Peter and Paul's, Straide.
An £11,000 hair raising event
What a snip! Six Castlebar men have raised a whopping £11,000 for the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Foundation.
They had their heads shaven in the McGolderick's 'Headshave' and through sponsorship they collected this astounding figure.
Peter McCann, Brendan McCormick, Eamonn Benji Smith, Mark Gaffney, Eamon Mongey and Pat Tierney presented the cheque to Guinness Group Ireland representative Killian Scollan.
