Building work on the new £4 million Holiday Village at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar commences on Tuesday next when phase one gets underway.

This will involve the erection of eleven cottages at a cost of £1 million with a finishing date of February next.

Within a few weeks a second contract for the remaining development works will be awarded by Castlebar Urban Council.

The entire project will be completed and ready for occupation by next Easter.

The Minister for Tourism and Trade, Mr. Enda Kenny visited the site on Monday to view progress on the development. While there he was pictured by Tom Campbell turning the ceremonial sod.

Minister Kenny said: "This is a major tourist development project and will greatly add to the level of tourist facilities in the Castlebar area.

"When the project is completed, it will be professionally managed, professionally marketed and will provide high standards of accommodation along with quality services.

"This project will also have the effect of refocussing Castlebar to the lakes. For generations the town has built away from the lakes but now with the holiday village developed on the shores of Lough Lannagh, the lakes will become a valuable amenity for everyone in terms of leisure pursuits, angling and business."
