Mayo shows bottle in recycling work
Over half a million bottles and jars were collected by the Rehab Recycling Partnership (RRP) in Mayo last year.
A breakdown of the figures shows that over 32 tonnes of glass was collected >from the Dunnes Stores car Park in Castlebar, making it the busiest collection point in the region.
It just pipped the Mill Street, Westport car part where 31 tonnes of glass was gathered over the same period.
Meanwhile Achill Island's fledgling off-shore recycling facility took 12,000 bottles and jars.
But the recycling system does carry some problems in that a lot of rubbish was being deposited close to the collection units.
Willie Scully of RRP said; "As the numbers of active recyclers grows we still find that a small minority of people abuse the bring centres leaving rubbish behind them.
"We believe that a small minority are causing the problem but they cause a major headache for conscientious recyclers, local residents, RRP and the local authority."
He added that if people found a site that needed a clean-up they should ring Freephone 1850-585-300.
