Westport Urban Council

The June monthly meeting of Westport Urban Council takes place tomorrow (Thursday) evening in the Council Chamber at 8p.m.

Topics on the agenda for discussion include traffic lights at the Castlebar Road/ Distillery Road and North Mall/Newport Road.

Members will also be reviewing Civic Week and are to fix a date for the annual meeting of the authority. Chestnut Grove proposals

Members of Westport Urban Council are to consider a proposal to provide speed ramps in Chestnut Grove.

The motion by Mr. John Joe O'Malley also calls on the authority to erect a wall from Lamberts corner from Altamount Street to Chestnut Grove. Estates survey and name signs proposal

A motion calling for a survey of all new estates in the Westport urban district and to arrange for the erection of estate name signs is to be discussed when members of the authority meet tomorrow (Thursday) night.

The motion has been put forward by Mr. Patrick Durcan.

Irish exhibition

An exhibition promoting the Irish language opens at Westport Library this Friday evening.

Aoibhnis an Eolais has been prepared by children aged 9 - 12 years and covers topics such as the famine, boats, nature and child care.

The event has been organised by Noreen Gannon.

Baby girl for Derrada couple

Congratulations to Patrick and Majella Hughes, Derrada, Newport on the birth of their baby daughter.

Adult tennis

Monday night is adult night at Westport Tennis Club. A fun game will be organised every week starting from last Monday at 8p.m. All adults interested in tennis are asked to attend.

Choral Society annual meeting

Westport Choral Society hold their annual general meeting on Tuesday night, June 17 at 8.30p.m. in the Parish Centre.

Quay Play School enrolment

Enrolment forms for the Quay Play School are available at the school this week. Call in to the school or contact (098) 27955 between 10a.m. and 12.30p.m.

Active Retirement Association activities

The Westport Active Retirement Association committee are organising weekly classes for members in flower arranging and art. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Rose Golden at (098) 25385 or Tommy Duffy at (098) 27282.

Members are reminded that bingo continues every Tuesday at 3p.m. at the Plougastel Centre.

Mayo's Rose of Tralee selection

Mayo's entrant for this year's Rose of Tralee contest will be selected on Friday night in Hotel Westport.

This year's competition to find Mayo's winning Rose has been organised by Westport Lions Club. The evening kicks off with dinner at 8p.m. followed by the presentation of the Roses at 9.30p.m.

Master of ceremonies for the night is Dermot Langan and entertainment will be provided by Una Quinn and The Attic Boys. A bar exemption is provided for the event.

All proceeds will be donated to the CAT scan appeal fund for Mayo General Hospital.

Baby daughter for Farnaught couple

Congratulations to Ann and David Browne, Farnaught, Westport on the birth of their baby daughter at Castlebar General Hospital.

Death of Clare Feehan, Upper Quay

The death has taken place of Clare Feehan (nee Heverin), Upper Quay, Westport and formerly of Leenane Road, Westport.

A popular member of the community, with a kind and affable personality, her passing is deeply regretted by all who knew her. Claire was predeceased by her parents Peter and Ivy and brother Adrian.

She is survived by her husband, Hugh; sisters, Annette, Stephanie and Yvonne; brothers, Paddy (England) and Peter (Galway); father-in-law, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends to whom sympathy is extended.

May she rest in peace.

Country Estate golf course now open

The par 3 nine hole golf course at Westport House Country Estate is now open. This is a challenging course located in one of Ireland's most beautiful settings - the front lawn of Westport House.

Season family membership is £45; adult membership £25; and children over 10 is £10. The fee per round for non-members is £4. Equipment is not included.

Appointed Peace Commissioner

Mr Seamus Gavan, Mill Street, Westport has been appointed a Peace Commissioner by the Minister for Justice, Nora Owen.

Death of Liscarney lady

The death has taken place of Mrs. Annie Kelly, Cloonskill, Liscarney, Westport.

Formerly of Ayle, Westport, Annie was a popular figure in her local community. Her pleasant and affable personality will be missed by all who knew her.

Removal took place from Navin's Funeral Home Westport to St. Patrick's Church, Aughagower. She was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery after Mass for the repose of her soul.

May she rest in peace.

Mulchrone - Joyce marriage

The marriage took place in Currane Church of Pat Mulchrone, Kilmeena, Westport and Maura Joyce, Currane.

The best man was Oliver Mulchrone and Dominic Mulchrone was groomsman. Celia Joyce and Bernadette Joyce were bridesmaids.

Fr. John Kenny, CC, Achill celebrated the Nuptial Mass. A reception was held afterwards in the Castlecourt Hotel.

Pat is son of Mr and Mrs Michael Mulchrone, Kilmeena. Both Pat and Maura are employed at Allergan, Westport.

Golf redevelopment draw

Tickets for the redevelopment are on sale at Westport Golf Club clubhouse. The big draw is taking place on October 3 in the Castlecourt Hotel.

Tickets are £5 each or a book of three for £10.

The top prize is a complete set of Dunlop golf clubs, bag and caddy car. Other prizes include a video recorder, colour television, tickets to London, and golf lessons with Alex Mealia.

Killawalla birth

The death has occurred of Mr. Edward O'Malley, Owenwee, Westport.

Removal was from Navin's Funeral Home, Westport to St. Mary's Church. He was laid to rest after Requiem Mass in Drummin Cemetery.

Carnaclay couple celebrate silver wedding

Congratulations to Mary and Tommy Monaghan, Carnaclay, Westport who celebrated their silver wedding anniversary.

Westport Urban Council

The Western Care Celebrity Golf Classic takes place at Westport Golf Club on Wednesday next, June 18. Up to seventy teams will be competing for prizes worth more than £3,000.

The course is available for most of the day, except an hour for members, with t-ff starting at 8.a.m. The last game starts at 6.30p.m.

Achill winner in national Credit Union competition

Achill woman Sinead Corrigan was one of 39 national winners in the Irish League of Credit Unions National poster competition.

Sinead's merit award for her entry in the 18 years and over category was received by her sister Lorna on her behalf.

The winners were chosen from nearly 200 national finalists who had progressed through preliminary credit union and chapter stage levels.
