Garda warning to 'elated' exam students

By tom Kelly

GARDAI in Mayo gone undercover to tackle the county's growing drug problem. The operation was stepped up in the aftermath of the Leaving Certificate examinations.

Garda Chief Superintendent John Carey confirmed concern within the force that 'elated' students might be targeted by drug pushers.

He issued a warning to parents to be vigilant in regard to how their children involved themselves in post-exam celebrations.

Chief Supt. Carey stated the force's crackdown on drugs has been working successfully. Gardai in Belmullet made a seizure of drugs in the town on Monday night. It followed hot on the heels of a similar seizure in Westport over the weekend.

Said Chief Supt. Carey: "Our campaign against drugs is an on-going one."

The force has also adopted a very strict policy in regard to underage drinking. Clear signals have been issued that the problem will not be tolerated with action being taken against rogue publicans.
