Water Safety

A water safety course will be held by the National Safety Council in Charlestown from July 14 to 19 and will involve instruction in swimming and lifesaving.

Louisburgh Minstrel

The Louisburgh Society will present An Irish Minstrel, an illustrated lecture by Joe Byrne, presenter of the MWR 'Ceol and Failte' at the Granuaile Centre, Louisburgh tomorrow (Thursday) at 8.30 pm

It will feature Irish music through the ages with a variety of instruments including tin whistle, flute and fiddle. Admission is £3 and concessions will apply.

Barnacogue school centenary

Barnacogue National school, a few miles from Swinford, celebrates the 100th year of its foundation in August 1998. Plans are in the pipeline to publish a centenary magazine to mark the occasion.

Anyone with old photographs or articles relating to the school or area should contact committee members Margaret Jennings or Margaret McNicholas, Barnacogue or Bernadette Ansboro or Sheila Lenehan, Killaturley, Swinford.

A fund raising initiative kicks off with a social taking place in Boland's Lounge, Swinford this Saturday night.

24-hour trading

Mayo star footballer John Casey will officiality open the 24-hour Spencer Park Maxol filling station in Castlebar on Friday at 3 pm

The operation has been taken over by Marc Reilly, Ballinrobe Road, Castlebar. This is the first 24-hour filling station and shop in Castlebar. See inside for further details.

Kay is Rehab president

Ms Kay Duffy, a former matron at Mayo general Hospital, has been elected president of Castlebar Rehab.

The highly popular Kay is a former 'High Queen of Connaught' for her sterling fund raising efforts.

Other officers elected were: Chairman: James O'Malley; Secretary Nora Corrigan; Joint-Treasurers: Kevin Bourke and Mary Connolly.

Delegates to County Committee: Paddy Cannon, Kay Sweeney and John Deacy.

Customer Care Awards

Theoverall winner of the 1997/97 PJ Hennelly Customer Care and Service Memorial Award will be announced tomorrow (Thursday).

There are five nominations for the title in Nurse Patricia Martyn, hotel receptionist Carmel Roughneen, Castlebar Town Foreman, Pat Healy, bus driver Sean Gallagher and Librarian Gerry King.

The project is organised by Castlebar Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Travellers Friend Hotel & Theatre and the Connaught Telegraph.

The widow of the late Mr Hennelly, Peggy, will present the overall aware at a lunchtime function in the Travellers Friend Hotel tomorrow.
