Croagh Patrick Peace Link

Inter-county footballer David Brady from Ballina is to lead this year's annual Link for Peace at Croagh Patrick on Saturday August 16 at 3 pm.

Organised by Mayo Rehab it will be dedicated to the late Mrs. Mary McGuinn from Curry, Co. Sligo, who last year, at the age of 103 years, participated in the Link with Mayo team manager John Maughan.

Ticket sales

Connaught Final tickets will be on sale in Melletts Bar, Swinford tomorrow (Thursday) night at 10p.m. and in Campbell's Lounge on Friday night at the same time.

Nursing success

Carmel Sheridan, Tullyduff, Kilmaine has graduated from the Meath Hospital, Dublin as a Registered General Nurse.

She was educated at Kilmaine national school, the Convent of Mercy, Ballinrobe, Ballinrobe Community School and is daughter of Paddy and Freda Sheridan.

Coming of Age

Congratulations are extended to Helen Casey of the Connaught Telegraph's advertising staff who celebrated her 21st birthday on Saturday night with a party in Keane's of Carnacon.

Bank Holiday Arrangements

As the offices of the Connaught Telegraph will be closed on August Bank Holiday Monday the latest time for the receipt of advertisements and copy for next week's edition is 12 noon on Friday.

Tooreen Cement fears

Members of Tooreen Action Group have expressed disappointment at the apparent abandonment of plans by Industrialist Frank Harrington to fly representatives of the group to Germany on a fact finding mission.

Mr Harrington who plans a major £30m cement factory at Tooreen had proposed bringing a group to East Germany to visit a similar operation and allay fears but this has fallen through.

Meanwhile, the Action Group says that an article in last Sunday's British Observer newspaper confirms their health fears over emissions from cement production.

Good news for Westport House

Despite reports that tourism industry in Mayo has slumped over the past number of weeks Westport House and Country Estate has reported a 10% increase in visitor numbers and a 25% increase in family day trippers.

Lord Altamont, owner of the property, expressed delight with the announcement.
