South Mayo LEADER Company         LEADER is a rural development initiative of the European Union. It is aimed at fragile rural areas and areas of lagging development. There were a total of 217 such areas defined for the purpose of implementing the LEADER programme in 1992. 17 of those areas were in Ireland, one of which was South West Mayo (IR 12). South Mayo LEADER Company is a Company limited by Guarantee, which is owned by a large number of Community organisations and self-help groups in South Mayo. During the LEADER 1 period, the Company oversaw investments of over Ir£5,500,000 when both private and public funds are included, in a total of over 200 projects under a wide variety of headings. The LEADER initiative is coordinated in Europe by AEIDL
