The North Mayo Sculpture Trail

Sculptures F to J

The North Mayo Sculpture Trail begins in Ballina and follows the coastal route through Killala, Ballycastle, Belderriig, Belmullet and down to Blacksod.

Sculpture: Joint Student Project

"Slí na nOg"
Lacken Cross.

The sculpture celebrates the meeting point of four parishes in Lacken. Four standing stones mark the entrance through a circular mound of earth enclosing stone seating in a central chamber.

Location: in the grounds of Lacken Cross School, 3 miles from Killala on the Ballycastle Road.

Sculptor: Tony Murphy

"Court Hence"
Ballycastle Cottages.

An open circular enclosure of stone incorporating seating in its inner circumference, with an earthen embankment falling behind, inspired by the Megalithic monuments.

Location: the open space in front of Ballycastle Cottages just outside Ballycastle town on the Killala road.

Sculptor: Fritse Rind

"Battling Forces"
Downpatrick Head.

This is a place where strong elements - sea, storm, land - give continuous battle to man and to each other. The 30 m long sculpture gives form to a frozen moment in an ongoing struggle between two forces of a different nature.

Location: Take the Downpatrick Head Road out of Ballycastle past Tom Langan Park. Follow the signpost to Downpatrick Head until you almost reach the car park. On the sea side of the road is site 'H'.

Sculptor: Eilis 0 Baoil

"Wind Trees"
Muingelly

This piece is a gigantic hand print set into the hillside. At each fingertip a dry stone wall reflects the rock strata below. The wind blowing across Muingelly hill will play upon pan pipes set into each wall and sculpt the five different indigenous trees growing there.

Location: On the Ballycastle/Belderg Road one mile from Doonfeeny House on the south side of the road at an S-bend, situated on the hill side.

Sculptor: Walter Michael

"Dun Caochain Head"
Cathru Thaidhg (Carrowteige)

A sculpture based on the local legend associated with the one eyed giant. One hundred metre long construction, using earth and local stone. When viewed from site entrance the very Iong face shrinks to present the correct proportions.

Location: Take the Carrowteige Road off the Glenamoy/Belmullet Road. On reaching a T-Junction, turn left to Carrowteige Village. 100 yards past the school on the left is site 'J', best seen from the coast road at Pollatomish.
