Ballyhaunis a busy town situated amidst a patchwork of green fields as you travel into Mayo from Roscommon.Recreation and Sport

Ballyhaunis has an outdoor swimming pool which is popular in the Summer months.

The excellent Ballyhaunis Golf Course is described as an 'all weather course' because it is playable most of the year round.

Local clubs include GAA, rugby, cricket, karate, bridge, cycling, angling, game shooting and facilities for handball and squash. The area is particularly good for game shooting and fishing, with the Clare-Dalgan river and various lakes in the locality being major assets.

Soccer and hurling are catered for by a number of clubs in neighbouring towns and villages.

Community Facilities and Development Organisations

Ballyhaunis Parochial Hall is used extensively as a community centre (with 23 groups per week currently using the facilities), and more recently the Abbey House, which is home to the Family Resource Centre and Mayo VEC Adult Education Services.

Ballyhaunis Community Council, Ballyhaunis Chamber, The Abbey Partnership and the Family Resource Centre work to further the development and support the needs of the community. There are numerous other groups involved in providing services, care, recreational and cultural activities.

Festivals and Culture

Drama and music is alive and well in Ballyhaunis. There are five choirs in the town, a school of Irish Dancing, and a Dramatic Society as well as the Fun Factory for children and a Speech and Drama school.

There are two main festivals in the year:

  • The Abbey Pattern - a community day with sports, entertainment, music, dog show and much more
  • The May Weekend Festival which includes a Fair Day event
