Spirit Labels

The Spirit Labels and Pale Ale Label were an example of labels placed on bottles of whiskey which were bottled by Spirit Merchants at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century in small towns all over Ireland.

The Whiskey in casks was supplied by firms such as: M.D. Daly and Sons Ltd who were Shippers Bonders and Blenders. Daly's was a firm from Acadamy Street in Cork City. One such invoice that I have in my possession is dated 22nd July 1913.

The well known distillers John Power and Son and John Jameson and Sons Ltd supplied the whiskey and the printed labels to local merchants. Regular checks were carried out to make sure that the whiskey was properly bottled for sale to customers.

The Ale was also supplied in barrells and half-barrells by such well known companies as: Arthur Guinness, Smithwicks, McArdle Moore, O'Connells and George Younger. I have a consignment receipt dated 18th March 1889 from George Younger. The Ale was transported to Ballaghadereen by the Midland Great Western Railway Co. It was then collected by a carter and brought to Charlestown.

The following merchants would have been bottlers of spirits at the time: J.W. Mulligan, James G. Murray, P.A. Mulligan, M.C. Henry, John Morrisroe, McDonnells and Bernard Moffitt

Guinness Extra Stout was bottled by James Durkhan, on Church Street, Charlestown as show on this label from 1954.
