Rent-A-Cottage Scheme

Louisburgh

County Mayo in the West of Ireland

The Rent-A-Cottage Schemes of Western Ireland spring naturally from long traditions of befriending the traveller.

When we, the people of Louisburgh, County Mayo (12 miles from Westport via the Coast Road), decided to build ten new cottages right next to our village, it was because we wanted our visitors to come as neighbours, not as strangers. We wanted you to feel at home among us.

Freedom

Renting a cottage sets you free of clocks and fixed meal times. With your cottage as your private hideaway, you can come and go as the fancy takes you, in an atmosphere of peace and informality.

Location

The cottages are tucked away down a quiet road, just a stroll from the village square. They are clustered on a four-acre, rocky, landscaped knoll, with a view of mountains on one side, and the Atlantic on the other.

A stroll further down this road will bring you to a stony beach with a view of the river and Carramore Strand, a Blue Flag beach. Carramore is just 800 metres away, walking or driving through the village.

Our Cottages - Comfort and Charm

Cottages are built in the traditional style with slate roof, whitewashed walls and small windows. Each has a front porch and a half-door to lean on. The interiors blend authentic tradition with today's comfort and convenience.

In the living room, with its rugged stone flooring, and pine dresser, a peat fire flickers on the hearth beneath the old iron pothooks. But there is also central heating throughout, and an all-electric kitchen and cosy bedrooms.

Award

Our cottages are owned and operated by Louisburgh Holidays Plc. - a company set up by the local people in 1976. They are grant aided and approved by the Irish Tourist Board.

In their second year of operation the cottages were the national winners of the prestigious U.D.T Tourism Endeavour Award in the accommodation category.

What to See and Do

Louisburgh's scenery is as dramatic and unspoiled as any of the western shores of Europe. In a survey to find the ten best beaches in Europe, the British travel magazine "What Holiday" had this to say: "For solitude, the Atlantic beaches along the West Coast of Ireland are unbeatable: mile upon mile of deserted sands, blustery, melancholy and magnificent This bleak and fractured coast is at its best at Tallabaun Strand, Louisburgh. It's virtually uninterrupted seven-mile stretch af hard sands interspaced with rocky pools and little coves. There are dunes beyond the sand and marshland beyond the dunes and rarely another soul in sight"

Uncluttered Roads

The short drive from Westport runs along the island-studded Clew Bay, under the shadows of Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holy mountain of pilgrimage.

To the north lies Achill, and near Louisburgh, Clare Island uprises in the Atlantic, its cliffs majestic, Capri-like in the setting sun.

To the South lies Connemara, less than an hours drive away. Connemara National Park & Kylemore Abbey may be reached via Leenane along the scenic Doolough & Killary fjord drive.
