Cycling & Walking in Mulranny

The Great Western Greenway

The 42km Great Western Greenway, stretching from Westport to Achill, is Ireland's longest (traffic free) cycling and walking trail. The Great Western Greenway follows the route of the old Westport to Achill railway line, built during the 1800's, which closed down in 1937. The Newport to Mulranny trail stretches 18km and the Mulranny to Achill route is 13km long, both of which provide an excellent recreational amenity for locals and visitors alike. The Greenway, with its gentle gradients and outstanding scenery, is suitable for people with moderate levels of fitness.

Little more than a year after opening, the Newport to Mulranny route was awarded the coveted European Destination of Excellence (EDEN). This award promotes sustainable tourism development models across the European Union and draws attention to the values, diversity and common features of European tourist destinations. The recipients of the award are recognised for their commitment to social, cultural and environmental sustainability.

The Great Western Greenway is already an excellent local amenity and tourist attraction which will help to establish Mayo as a premier walking and cycling destination. The project was developed by Mayo County Council with the co-operation of local landowners, and in partnership with other state agencies and bodies and co-funded by the Department of Transport and Fáilte Ireland.

Breathtaking views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick to the south and the Nephin Beg Range to the north afford the walker or cyclist some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland. The Great Western Greenway is an exciting and safe outdoor experience for all the family and a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the beautiful woodlands and some of the original hand-cut stone bridges - great reminders of the glorious railway era.
