For the golfer, Westport championship 18 hole course is only 7 miles away and Mulranny 9-hole golf links is 10 miles from Newport along the scenic drive to Achill.
Walking & Cycling
For the walking enthusiast the old Bangor Trail walk (48 km), regarded as one of the finest hill-walks in the country begins in Newport.
The new Newport to Mulranny section of the Great Western Greenway offers some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland. Stretching 18km, the first phase of this dedicated walking & cycling track follows the route of the old Westport to Achill railway line, which closed in 1937. Walkers or cyclists can enjoy spectacular views of Clew Bay along this breath-taking route. The 18km route from Newport to Mulranny is currently being extended by 13km from Mulranny to Achill in the west, and by 11km from Newport to Westport in the south. The resulting 42km off road cycle and walking route will be a world class outdoor attraction, and The Black Oak Inn is ideally situated along this route, making it an excellent base for cycling and walking enthusiasts.
