May 2016

The Mayo International Choral Festival presents “A Concert for Peace” to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising. The event will take place in Knock at the internationally recognised Basilica on Saturday 14th May 2016 at 8pm.

The orchestra will perform Jenkins’ international choral sensation “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace”, composed to mark the millennium in 2000 by Sir Karl Jenkins. It is a powerful and compelling phenomenon with over 15 gold and platinum awards which will lead the audience to a final message of hope and peace passing through the disharmony of conflict. In addiction the touching “Elegy Suite for 1916” composed by the Hollywood movie Composer Patrick Cassidy will be performed.

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra, recently voted World’s Favourite Orchestra in an international poll (Bachtrack.com, 2015), with his Conductor, David Brophy, features in the concert along with the Mayo born Mezzo Soprano Anne Marie Gibbons and the Limerick born Tenor Owen Gilhooly.

Members of the Ballina Chamber Choir, Cór Mhaigh Eo and Dún Laoghaire Choral Society will come together to form a 120-strong choir to collabrate on this event.

This event will be one of the highlights of Easter Rising Centenary Celebration for certain.
