On Thursday 23rd June, Canola Pictures in association with The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) will screen the film “The Humpback Whales of Cape Verde” as part of a unique collaboration with the libraries of Ireland, in Belmullet Arts Centre, Aras Inis Gluarie, at 7pm. It is one of a limited number of screenings in libraries around Ireland and the admission is free.

The film, shot in Ireland, Cape Verde and Malta, follows Dr Simon Berrow and his international team of marine scientists on an ambitious adventure to prove Humpback Whales from both the northern and southern hemispheres use the Cape Verde archipelago as a breeding ground. This film is part of a 10 year search for the breeding grounds of Humpback Whales in Ireland.

After the screening there will be talks on the Humpback Whales led by experts from the IWDG and the film's director, Tony Whelan.

The film highlights the importance of conservation in Irish seas where the number of whales is increasing each year. Ireland is becoming internationally important and, this year, is celebrating its tenth anniversary of being declared a whale and dolphin sanctuary.
