The 2019 Scoil Acla Summer School will take place from Saturday 27th July to Saturday 3rd August on Achill Island. It is reputed as one of Ireland’s oldest summer schools, founded in 1910 for the preservation and promotion of the Irish language and traditional Irish music. It revived in 1985.

This year the Irish music legend Seán Keane will officially open the 2019 Scoil Samhraidh Acla at Óstán Oileán Acla, Polranny on Monday 29th July at 6pm.

The extensive range of traditional music classes available at Scoil Acla includes accordion, banjo, bodhrán, concertina, flute, fiddle, harp, tin whistle, uileann pipes, drumming workshop, guitar accompaniment and piano accompaniment for all levels. Many sessions will be held around Achill Island throughout the week.

New this year is the bagpipe class, Terry Tully will join the ranks as a piping tutor.

This popular summer school also hosts a highly esteemed writers' workshop, poetry readings, drama performances, concerts and art exhibitions.

There are also workshops in Traditional Irish Dance, Sean-Nós singing, classes in Irish Language (Achill dialect), Creative Writing, Arts Courses, quilting and the Traditional Basket Weaving, one of the most popular courses at Scoil Acla Summer School.
