Ballycastle Womens' Group in Co. Mayo

The Women's Group was founded in 1996.

With grant aid from Local Development Partnership, we held our first Art & Craft Exhibition in 1997. Due to the success of this and the amount of talent in the group, we opened an Art and Craft shop.

This is presently situated in the Resource Centre, Upper Main Street, Ballycastle and is open daily from 10am to 6pm. It is stocked with all locally hand-made products such as knitwear, crochet, painted stones, cushions, cot and pram quilts, painted boxes, cards, shillelaghs, flower arrangements, wooden clocks, bowls and lamps, pottery, aprons and bag tidies. It also stocks carrageen and dillisk which is gathered locally.

The Art Group has held an exhibition of their paintings in the Bank of Ireland, Ballina as well as many local exhibitions. Art classes are held on Monday nights under the guidance of Aine Connor. The group have designed and completed a wall hanging of 28 knitted squares with a design in Swiss Darning and initialled by each individual member. Throughout the winter months they have talks and demonstrations as well as art and craft classes and also organise Irish classes.

In 1999, representatives from Corrella de Llobregat, Catalonia, Spain and Derby City Council's Equal Opportunities Programme visited and were very interested in how we got started and what we were doing. The group have also been visited by two groups from Poland and a group of women from Slovakia accompanied by Sr. Maureen Lally.

The Women's Group is open to and pleased to welcome as members any interested ladies living in or around Ballycastle. Meetings are advertised in the church bulletin and usually take place on Thursday evenings in the Resource Centre at 9pm.
