Delia Henry Memoirs, Charlestown in Co. Mayo

Delia Henry (nee Lenehan) was born in 1910 , the seventh of nine children and grew up in Kilaturley, just outside Charlestown.

Educated in the local national school in Barnacogue, Charlestown, Delia went on to become a teacher, and taught her first class in Cloonlyon National School in 1921. She later became principal in nearby Tavneena National School, from where she retired in 1975, at the age of 65.

She has a wealth of local history and an aptitude for relating it in a very interesting manner. Here are some extracts from her memoirs.

Killaturley native, John Lynskey, interviewed Delia Henry in March 2014, close to her 104th birthday.
