Articles from Lewis' Topographical Dictionary published in 1837

These are articles relating to he area taken from Samuel Lewis' Topographical Survey of Mayo. Lewis' survey contain statistics from the first complete census of Ireland which was taken in 1831. The areas listed below are Crossmolina, Kilfyan, which relates to the present day, Kilfian and Magaunagh, which is in essence Moygownagh.

Lewis’ data gives us a clear indication of life in Ireland during the early part of the 19th century. Rural areas of Mayo were very much dependent of locally sourced raw materials for contruction methods and the local Market Day played a significant role in the economy of any district.
