Loughglynn/Lisacul/Gortaganny Community Games Club

Loughglynn/Lisacul/Gortaganny Community Games Club was founded by the late Joe Nonnan N.T. Working as School Principal in Lisacul N.S. he saw the need to get the children of the area involved in athletics. As a result of his endeavours a Community Games Committee was formed, which included Pat Carty, Tom Coppinger and Seamus Regan.

The first parish games were held in the summer of 1980. The first people from the Parish to win County Community Games medals were Ann Fitzpatrick taking bronze in the U12 100m and Ann Cummins taking bronze in the U16 High Jump.

The first parishioner to win gold at County level was Noel Raftery Jr. who in 1981 won not one but two gold medals in the U8 80m and 100m. In so doing he became the first person from the area to compete in the National Finals in Mosney.

The first individual girl competitor to win a prize in Mosney was Sandra Deery who won a fourth place certificate in the U8, 80m in 2000. The first boy competitor to win in Mosney was Declan Creighton who won silver in 1999 for U10 Hurdles. The first group to win a National prize was the U12 Relay team of 2000 who took home silver. Team members were Declan Creighton, Padraig Creighton, Cathal Hitchin, Donal Ward and John Cox.

In 2001 Maria McCarthy won a fourth place certificate in the U8 80m and Declan Creighton won bronze in the U12 100m. This made it three in a row for Declan. In 2004 our U15 handball team - Thomas Morgan, Alan O'Dowd, Frankie Daly, Grant Deeney and Mark Barrett - won bronze in Mosney.

Community Games embraces the arts also. Handwriting, Drawing and Choir are three such competitions we have entered with considerable success. Our Choir reached the National Finals and came fifth overall. Christopher Flanagan won gold for handwriting in 2002 as did Eoghan Cahill in 2005. Gymnastics is another area we have had considerable success in at county level.

Our successes have not been confined solely to individual activities. We have also had our share of county titles in girls and boys Gaelic football, girls and boys basketball and in 2003 three of our athletes - Noel Deery, Thomas Creighton and Brendan McCarthy were members of the County Cross-Country team who competed in Mosney.

In 2004 we competed in the cycling on grass competition where Diarmuid Woods won gold at County as he did again in 2005.

Representing us in Mosney in 2005 was the U16 Girls Relay team of Joan and Lorraine McNulty, Niamh Ward, Ruth Flanagan and Ann-Marie Scally; David McCarthy U12 100m, Diarmuid Woods U14 cycling on grass, Michelle Leetch U16 1500m. Diarmuid Woods won a silver medal.

In 2006 the parish was represented in the Mosney National finals by Nicole Creighton U8 60m, Diarmuid Woods U14 cycling in grass, Sandra Deery U14 100m, Thomas Creighton U16 100m, Noel Deery U16 1500m. 2007 saw Ronan Cahill winning silver in swimming.

Eoin Callaghan won a bronze medal in the Art finals in 2008. Mosney competitors for 2008 were Jason Doory U8 60m, Ciaran Roddy gymnastics and Sarah Jane Woods music.

Our group is a voluntary one relying on the generosity of the people of the parish. In 2004 Roscommon Sports Partnership gave us a grant of €800 and in 2005 they granted the organisation €300.

Community Games is about participation. We look forward to getting new members each year.
