Mayo has produced two winners of the prestigious Rose of Tralee title. The international competition takes place each year in Kerry, as part of the Rose of Tralee festival, which attracts thousands of visitors to the area and a worldwide televison audience.
Luzveminda 'Mindi' O'Sullivan became the first Mayo native to win the honour, representing Galway in 1998. Mindi was the 40th Rose of Tralee and chose Trocaire as her charity for the year. She lives in Castlebar with her family and has worked in the medical or healthcare industry since she obtained her masters in Molecular Medicine.
Carnacon native Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin represented Mayo in 2005 and went on to become the 47th Rose of Tralee. Since then she has toured the world as the lead singer of traditional Irish band, Ragús, appeared on various RTÉ TV shows, obtained her higher diploma for education and acted as the ambassador for Irish language week, Seachtain na Gaeilge.
