Carne Golf Links

Belmullet, Co. Mayo in the West of Ireland

Officially opened in 1995, Carne Golf Links, sculpted through the centuries by the elements, has been lovingly moulded by Eddie Hackett into eighteen great golf holes. Forged from ancient commonage, he has created a wonderful golf course with as little disturbance as possible to the natural towering dunes in which it lies.

Wild flowers grow in abundance, the song of the lark, the croak of the ravens and the call of the corncrake can still be heard. The course winds through valleys and swings past towering sand dunes, to provide a challenge to all golfers who are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play this magnificent links course.

Golf Journalist's Comments on Carne

"From the 1st tee to the 18th green it is all that one could ever yearn for" James W Finegan, Emerald Fairways and Foam-Flected Seas. "Quite simply the most stunning discovery I have made in golf" Dermot Gilleece, Irish Times. The last instructions given by the late Eddie Hackett, who regarded Carne and Waterville as his greatest achievements, was this plea: "It took nature thousands of years to create this and I don't want bulldozers to destroy it. Don't change anything after I've gone or I will turn in my grave." He can rest easy. His legacy to the game is the single most awesome course I have ever seen, with its wildly undulating fairways and cathedral greens. If I were limited to one course for the rest of my days, this would be it." Keith Ging 'The Express' Nov-1999.

'Golf World' voted Carne in Ireland's top five links courses January 2000.
