GERAGHTYS, O'TOOLES of Lecarrow, Burrishoole Parish
If anyone has ties to ANY of the Geraghtys / Geraughtys/ Garritys of Lecarrow in Burrishoole Parish, I'd apprecate hearing from you. My second cousin recently returned from a visit to Ireland and brought back some great information on Sir Neal O'Donal's Estate Records from the National Archives. It may help several several of us tie our Geraghty families together, or help tie them to older generations of Geraghtys. The first Geraghty in Lecarrow mentioned in the O'Donal records was AUSTIN GERAGHTY (Austin #1), in 1788. Then 15 pages of undated records, ending with evictions (probably 1798 after the uprising with French assistance.) The last record mentions "Widow Geraghty", so Austin #1 died sometime between 1788-1798. The next Lecarrow Geraghtys in the O'Donel records are another AUSTIN GERAGHTY(Austin #2), and a MARTIN GERAGHTY. Probably sons of the first Austin. These notes are from 1810, 1814, 15 and 16. The 1814, 15 and 16 records also mention other Geraghtys who lived in the city of Newport (not Lecarrow. Not farmers.) JAMES GERAGHTY on Market St., and THOMAS GERAGHTY on Weaver's Row (now Castlebar St.) They might be more sons of Austin #1, or sons of a MICHAEL GERAGHTY, who came from Northern Ireland (Sligo) to Newport in the 1780s to escape religious persecution. There are more O'Donel Estate records and Famine records for the next few decades at the National Archives, but my cousin has not had a chance to review them yet. Next trip to Ireland! So from there, we go to the Tithes Records(1832), which show AUSTIN GERAGHTY in Lecarrow Log and ANTHONY GERAGHTY in Lecarrow West. Probably the same Austin #2 above, plus a younger brother, finally old enough to be a land holder. Or, Anthony could be the son of Martin, who is missing. There are no Geraghtys in Lecarrow in Griffiths (1854). Looks like all the Catholics were evicted from Lecarrow at that time. There are several Geraghtys in other Burrishoole townlands and neighboring parishes, including 2 ANTHONY GERAGHTYS in Kilmeena. One could be the one from Lecarrow, evicted. One Anthony from Kilmeena came to Chicago, and lived to be 103 years old (born 1785)! Griffith's (1854) also shows an AUSTIN GERAGHTY in the city of Newport. Could be Austin #2, or... an Austin #3 born in the 1820s in the Newport area (not necessarily Lecarrow), who immigrated to Chicago in 1869. Getting back to the Lecarrow ANTHONY GERAGHTY in 1832 Tithes... we believe him to be the father of our great grandfather, JOHN GERAGHTY of Lecarrow (born 1830), who married CATHERINE O'TOOLE. They had 10 children from 1859 thru the mid 1870s: ANTHONY (died young), THOMAS (went to Scotland), CECELIA (married Patrick O'Malley, widowed, came to St. Louis), PATRICK (married Catherine Murray, lived in Burrishoole Parish, but spent some time in Scotland), MARTIN (married Bridget Fahy, lived in Drumgar, Kilmaclasser), MARIA (married Martin Kilroy in Chicago. Lived in St. Louis), JAMES (married Alice Moran, then Alice O'Malley. Lived in his parents' house, Lecarrow), BRIDGET (married James Goggins, lived in Kilmaclasser), JOHN went to England), MICHAEL (married Teresa Heenan. Came to St. Louis). About the O'TOOLE / TOOLE families from this area. The O'Donel records show a DARBY TOOLE from Lecarrow in 1778, and a GELLENS TOOLE in 1814, 15 and 16. The Tithes records of 1832 show Darby O'Toole in Lecarrow again, and Griffith's shows a LACKEY TOOLE there. I've seen several O'Toole women marry Geraghty men in neighboring townlands, but can't tie them to Darby, Gellens, Lackey, or my Catherine O'Toole who married John Geraghty of Lecarrow. If you know any more about the Geraghtys or O'Tooles of Lecarrow during ANY time period, I'd appreciate hearing from you. The same is true of anyone who can tie ANY of the Geraghty or Toole families from Burrishoole, Kilmaclasser or Kilmeena parishes together.
