Famine relief through churches
The Ballina webpage says the Presbyterian church was used for famine relief and as a school during the Great Famine. I believe one of my family, Henry Joynt (1816-1880) endowed a similar school at the Methodist church, which is still commemorated by a plaque on the wall. I had not realised that the school may have been associated with famine relief until I read of Count Paul Strzelecki's introduction of such schemes, which were piloted in Mayo. I would be interested if anyone knows more about this. Robert Joynt, Australia [removed]
