Bill Naughton Short Story Competition 2004

10th Annual Bill Naughton Short Story Competition Results --------------------------------------------------------------------- With several entries coming from the United States of America, and First Prize going to a writer in Dubai, the competition is now truly international! Prize Winners ------------------- (1st) “Shallow Water” by James Wareham (Dubai) (2nd) “The Newcomer” by P. Young (Ireland) (3rd) “The Enemy Camp” by Anne-Marie Coen (Ireland) Bill Naughton wrote many wonderful short stories and his writing is easily understood by a very broad spectrum of readers. One has no need to be an avid reader to understand the appeal of Naughton’s stories so in judging this competition stories with the broadest band of appeal have been favoured. The "Splinters" short story anthology, which contains the top eight stories received this year, will be available in the near future [removed] (Sterling), €6.00 (Euro) or $7.00 (U.S. Dollars) per copy. Stories in "Splinters": “The Enemy Camp” by Anne-Marie Coen “Selling the Nude” by Richard Wevill “Shallow Water” by James Wareham “Brief Ascension of Cuthbert O’Higgins” by David Lazell “Return Visit” by K. S. Dearsley “Stoop” by John McAllister “The Newcomer” by P. Young “Stitching Time” by Nuala Ní Chonchúir The Bill Naughton Short Story Competiton is organised by the Kenny/Naughton Autumn School, which was established in 1993 to promote an interest in the lives, works and times of the writers P. D. Kenny [1862 - 1944] and Bill Naughton [1910 - 1992]. Simon Downs (Chairman of the Adjudicating Committee) and his assistant Ginny Waln have worked hard and deserves great praise. Thanks to our sponsors: Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish Bank and Ulster Bank (all Ballyhaunis based); Mrs. Erna Naughton (Isle of Man); Mayo Arts Council (Castlebar); T.J. Rogers (Aghamore); [removed] Kiltimagh Ltd. Thanks to the many writers who entered this year's competition.
