Heath Spotted Orchid, Flora in Co. Mayo

The Heath Spotted Orchid is a native plant belonging to the family Orchidaceae. It can be found on the peaty or acid soils such as heaths, bogs and upland pastures. Its flowers are pale pink, purple or white with dark spots.

It grows to a height of between 15 cm and 50 cm. The stem is erect, glabrous and cylindrical sheathed by narrow, lanceolate and dark-spotted leaves.

It flowers from May to August and the inflorescence is dense with 15-35 flowers.

Its botanic name is Dactylorhiza maculata ericetorum , in Irish it is called Na circíní.
