August 2025

The 2025 Achill Camino Challenge will take place on Saturday, August 30th, and Sunday, August 31st.

This unique walking event is designed to highlight the breathtaking beauty and rich heritage of Achill Island. Participants can choose from three scenic routes, each offering a different way to experience the island's diverse landscapes.

Saturday Walks – August 30th

1. Slievemore to Dooagh Way

Starting and finishing at Slievemore Cemetery, this 10km loop leads walkers through rugged terrain, coastal views, and historic landmarks—including the evocative Deserted Village. This route is rated easy to moderate, making it suitable for most fitness levels.

2. The Coffin Way

This historic 18km trail follows the traditional funeral route once used by Achill’s communities, from Dookinella to Derreens. Rich in folklore and cultural significance, the walk offers a deep connection to the island’s past. Participants will gather at Patten’s Bar, with bus transport provided to the starting point in Dookinella. The route is graded moderate to strenuous.

Sunday Walk – August 31st

3. The Greenway and Forest Way

Spanning 18km, this route begins in Mulranny and ends in Achill Sound, following the picturesque Great Western Greenway. It takes walkers through the tranquil Tonragee Forest before rejoining the Greenway toward the finish. This moderate-grade walk features peaceful woodland paths, sweeping coastal views, and wide-open landscapes. Participants will meet at Óstán Oileán Acla, where a bus will transport them to the start in Mulranny.
