The Man of Slievemore

Achill island

An extraordinary Middle Bronze Age carved stone head has been discovered at the Cromlech Tumulus site on Slievemore Mountain in Achill.

At first the discovery appeared to be a beach stone, but a closer examination has revealed the two adjacent holes had been chipped away to reveal the white quartz interior of the pebble and two much smaller holes had been pecked into the exposed quartz reproducing a pair of eyes complete with whites and pupils.

Also two apparently natural holes on each side of the stone seem to mark the position of a pair of ears and finally the base of the stone has been carved to create a jawline.

After depth analysis this remarkable piece will tell interesting things about the Bronze Age representative art.
