On Thursday 11th August a spectacular event, “The Perseid Meteor Shower Watch”, will take place at Mulranny Golf Links at 11pm (weather dependent).

This event is organised by Mayo Dark Sky Park in collaboration with Mulranny Tourism, Ballycroy National Park and Newport Astronomy Club. Across the dark sky visitors will look for shooting stars, learn about the night sky and discover more about Ireland’s first Dark Sky Park.

The Perseids are a meteor shower associated with the Comet Swift-Tuttle and visible from mid-July each year. Its peak in activity is registered between 9 and 14 August. Usually the rate of meteors reaches 60 or more per hour, but this years a meteor outburst is expected with potentially 200 meteors visible in the skies per hour.
