Articles from Lewis' Topographical Survey published in 1837

These are articles relating to he area taken from Samuel Lewi's Topographical Survey of Mayo which contains statistics from the first complete census of Ireland which was taken in 1831.

Samuel Lewis travelled through many Irish townlands during the early years of the 19th century, gathering information which would be used in his summary of the area.

The items included in his journal included the type of housing, the quality of the land and the dates in which Fairs or Markets take place in a district.

This was the first intensive documentation of many parts of rural Ireland.
