Geesala and Doohoma History in Co. Mayo

The Mayo coastal villages of Doohoma and Geesala were important trading sea ports in the late 18th and early 19th century. During this period, building materials were shipped into Mayo en route to the larger influential towns of Westport and Castlebar.

The Great Famine which hit Ireland during the 19th century, inflicted a large reduction of the population of the area as food supplies dwindled dramatically. The years after the famine were tough on the area, but greater accessability was improved to Doohoma and Geesala during the 20th century.
