Thousands to gather for Peace Mass at Knock Shrine

Thousands will gather at Ireland’s National Marian Shrine to pray for Christians in Iraq and Syria on Saturday September 20th, the eve of World Peace Day. The Mass is being offered in solidarity with Christians who are being persecuted for their faith and for all across the globe who are being deprived of their right to religious freedom.

Images and footage have permeated the media in recent weeks highlighting the brutality and violence which is being exercised toward Christians whose only crime is their faith. Hundreds and thousands have had no choice but to flee their homes, while many of those who could not escape were offered the impossible choice of converting to Islam or face certain death. Towns and cities in Iraq that have been home to Christians for nearly two millennia now have no Christian presence as hundreds of thousands have fled to the Muslim Kurdish region for protection.

A recent letter from Louis Raphael Sako, the Patriarch of the Chalean Church, stated ‘What these peaceful Christians and loyal citizens experienced is a real genocide, a sad ending, and a proof of the privation of the religious, human, moral and national values. Therefore, it is a shameful stain in history everybody should know is a threat for all.’

Fr. Richard Gibbons, Rector, Knock Shrine described the importance of the mass taking place at Knock Shrine, ‘We will pray for an end to the suffering and pain of Christians in Iraq and Syria and for all across the globe who are being deprived of the right to practice their faith in peace and without fear of persecution. Masses and vigils have already being offered in Ireland and around the world.

At Knock Shrine, we feel it is incumbent upon us to stand in solidarity with those who suffer, support and comfort them through prayer, and to profess that they are not alone, that Christians around the world are praying for them and for an end to their pain and suffering. It is our hope that all who gather for this mass, though appalled and saddened by these events, will have the opportunity to share in this movement of prayer and through their generosity, a trait so sincerely held by the Irish, provide tangible support for Iraq’s persecuted Christians.’

A United Nations flag will be at full mast outside the Basilica and a Peace Candle will remain alight for the duration. A number of local groups are planning to walk to mass as a symbolic gesture to those who have been displaced in Iraq. The mass will be broadcast live at 3pm on Saturday 20th September via the knock shrine website http://www.knock-shrine.ie
